MARY WISEMAN
My dissertation, examines Hispanic|Latinxs first-generation students’ approaches to learning online at a community college, identified as a Hispanic Serving Institution [HSI]. In my research I have discovered some promising practices, for learning online, that speak directly to this particular student demographic.
During my dissertation I interviewed Hispanic|Latinxs students and learned what curricular and pedagogical approaches faculty teaching and learning online could implement as they design and facilitate online learning experiences.
Administrators, faculty, and staff must commit to transforming their institutional structures for serving in order to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes for all students. Is there something more that can be done for this fast growing Hispanic|Latinxs population of college students studying online? The answer is yes.
My study highlights the effectiveness of utilizing innovative methods and continuously investigating emerging trends in higher education, emphasizing online curriculum and teaching strategies. This research delves into how Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are currently aiding and bolstering their students. It explores upcoming trends for both the immediate and distant future in this sector. The focus extends to community colleges, examining their current approaches to assisting students in online learning environments, identifying areas for enhancement, and considering strategies to better equip these institutions for the forthcoming wave of online learners.
WHY IS THIS NECESSARY?
The Hispanic and Latinx population is experiencing rapid growth, heralding significant shifts in our societal landscape. Empowering this demographic is crucial, as their progress and success will, in turn, uplift our entire society. Education is a pivotal tool in this endeavor, and online learning provides the flexibility needed to achieve these goals.
My aspiration is to equip Hispanic and Latinx online students with the skills necessary to build a strong foundation for their future. By doing so, we not only strengthen their individual prospects but also enhance the resilience and prosperity of our communities and the nation as a whole.
